Trump lawyer John Dowd says Trump didn’t write the tweet in question but that he did. It kinda boggles the mind, OK. If John Dowd writes it, he’s not implicating himself in a crime and neither is the president. Right? So it’s kind of beautiful in its patheticness. It takes the blame off the president and simultaneously transforms the act itself from one of inadvertent confession to bumbling incompetence. John Dowd’s contention that he wrote that tweet is crazy/dumb/crazysmart all at once. Does many things at once: Diverts attention, creates confusion, takes blame off president and transforms the act itself from one of inadvertent confession to mistake. If Trump makes that mistake it’s inadvertent confession, signs of subconscious guilt. But if Dowd does it, it’s kind of understandable, loyal, maybe over-loyalty, like the worst thing about him is that he’s just too loyal, … And he’s admitting it just because, as a lawyer, his commitment to the truth is just too strong! To have done this and not confess would be so wrong! Amazing.
I love evil, roguish characters. They make for complex situations. If Trump wrote it it’s just Trump being Trump, except in this case it’s very bad because of what it implies. But if Dowd wrote it, well, it’s just Dowd in a clumsy moment.
